The Songhees and Esquimalt First Nations, BC Hydro and Tervita Corporation are proud to partner together for the creation of the Rock Bay Mural Project.

This collaborative effort between First Nations communities, government and industry honours the traditions and history of the Esquimalt and Songhees First Nations.

It means a lot to Songhees Nation when true partnerships are formed between groups like Tervita and BC Hydro. These types of arrangements give our young members the opportunity to further the artistic skills they need to forge a path in the arts. Our Nation members thank all that have been involved in bringing the mural project to life. We also thank our talented artists for doing an amazing job. The artwork created by the mural team is simply outstanding.     – Songhees Chief, Ron Sam.

The mural designs feature imagery of animals, plant medicines traditionally found in the area, and an elegant integration of traditional Lekwungen design elements.

Butch Dick, Songhees First Nation, and Darlene Gait, Esquimalt First Nation are the design artists

For Tervita and BC Hydro, the intent is to support community members in an important initiative that promotes cultural awareness and fosters community development.

The mural project created an opportunity for  several youth to obtain summer employment and gain hands-on experience in the creation of a large scale public art project as well as engaging in community and cultural activities for leadership and capacity building initiatives.
